Part 3: Lecture Plan

Lesson title / subject: 
Basic security at pre-primary school (4-5 years old students)

Pedagogical theory / learning theory: 
Teaching walk (Hyppönen & Lindén 2009)

Learning objectives: 
To understand the basic of environmental security

Learning contents:
At the end of the teaching walk session, students should know the following things; 
(1) the exit door
(2) assembly place in case of emergency 
(3) procedure in case of earthquake

Forms of assessment:
Group simulation (5 students), Pass or Fail

Other pedagogical considerations:
Showing a live simulation to the students before starting the course.


LECTURE STRUCTURE

Min. 1-5: 
Main teacher and 2 nursery teachers present themselves to the students. Main teacher explains the importance of the drill today.

Min. 6-10:
Any student that has questions will be answered by the main teacher.

Min. 10-35:
Main teacher and nursery teacher perform live simulation drill in front of students.

Min. 35-45:
Any student that has questions will be answered by the main teacher.

Min. 45-60:
Break time

Min. 60-120:
Groups of 5 students re-do the drill. Each group will be given 15 mins. 
13 mins to perform the drill and 2 mins for them to tell others how they felt. 
Thus, total number of students that perform the drill today is 20. 
Day 2 will be another 15 students.

Min. 120-150:
Teacher gives group feedback and asks anonymous feedback from students by using the happy or not method.
Teacher finally thanks group for today and take group picture which will be given as gifts to whole group. 
Teacher writes each student name to give security certificate of attendance.


OBSERVATION:
  • Students experienced performance-stress
  • Some students were talkative
  • Students were allowed to choose their own groups and eventually there were only boys and girls group.
  • Some students took their bags with them
  • Main teacher discussed with the nursery teachers that it is important to retrain at regular intervals and also to write a card which says "Room Empty".
